From 10 June to 17 September 2017, the documenta is taking place in Kassel for the 14th time. Globally it is considered the most important exhibition of contemporary art and attracts about one million visitors every five years. Of course, this creates a correspondingly great interest from the media. Therefore, traditionally the documenta is opened with an international press conference for which over 3,000 journalists registered for 7 June – a new attendance record which involved a number of logistic and organisational challenges. With a large contingent of personnel and technology, the team at the Kongress Palais ensured the success of the mega press conference.

Thus an interpreter service was established for the participating journalists that provided simultaneous translations in three languages (German, English and Greek). 60 folders, 15 technicians, 10 medics as well as various project teams from the documenta, the city of Kassel, the Kongress Palais and Kassel Marketing were there to ensure the smooth running of the event. And this not only in the building itself because all around the Kongress Palais numerous broadcasting vans of international TV stations were working.

“The infrastructure and technical equipment at the Kongress Palais offer the best conditions to organise complex event projects on any scale,” says Oliver Höppner, regional manager at Kassel Marketing and responsible for managing the Kongress Palais. “This was once again impressively demonstrated by the international press conference at the launch of the documenta.”

In the Kongress Palais itself, the press conference in the venue’s big hall was screened live in other rooms. In addition, live streaming on the internet offered art lovers around the world the opportunity to follow the events. In light of the large number of visitors, an extensive security concept was also developed for the event which covered both the exterior and interior of the venue to the same degree.
